7 Signs Your Main Sewer Line Needs Attention

Your main sewer line carries every gallon of wastewater from the house to the public sewer. Most homeowners never think about it until sewage comes up through a shower drain. The good news is that a failing line almost always gives warning signs first.

If you notice any of the signs below, a camera inspection can show exactly what is happening inside the pipe before a small problem turns into a messy emergency.

One slow drain is a fixture problem. Several slow drains at once is a sewer line problem.

1. Several drains are slow at once

When the kitchen sink, tub and toilets all drain slowly together, the restriction is downstream of all of them, in the main line.

2. Gurgling toilets and drains

Gurgling when you run water elsewhere in the house means air is being pushed through the traps because water cannot flow freely down the main.

3. Water backs up in the lowest fixture

Sewage or water appearing in a ground-floor shower, tub or floor drain when you flush is a classic main line blockage.

4. Sewer odor inside or outside

A persistent sewer smell near the cleanout, in the garage or in the yard can point to a cracked pipe or a failed joint.

5. Unusually green or soggy patches

A strip of lush grass or soft soil along the sewer route may be fed by a leaking line underground.

6. Repeat clogs after cleaning

If a line clogs again weeks after it was cleared, roots, a sagging section or a broken pipe are likely. Cleaning alone will not fix it.

7. An older home or mature trees

Older lines and properties with large trees are more prone to root intrusion and offset joints. A baseline camera inspection is smart when buying an older home.
